Preheat oven to 180°C. Butter and flour the cake tin.
Melt the chocolate and butter in a bain-marie or in the microwave. Leave to cool slightly.
In a bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until frothy.
Fold the melted chocolate-butter mixture into the egg-sugar mixture. Add vanilla extract if desired.
Sift the flour and gently fold into the mixture. Add a pinch of salt.
Add the chopped hazelnuts to the dough and mix gently.
Pour the batter into the prepared tin and smooth the surface.
Bake in a preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the tin for about 15 minutes, then remove from the tin and cool completely on a wire rack.
Once cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar or cocoa powder for decoration.
