Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease and flour the square baking tin.
In a saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate and butter, stirring regularly. Once melted and combined, remove from heat.
Add the granulated sugar to the melted mixture and stir until well incorporated.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add this dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just incorporated. Do not overmix.
If using walnuts, fold them gently into the dough.
Pour the batter into the prepared tin and smooth the top.
Bake in a preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Don't overbake to preserve the melt-in-the-mouth texture.
Remove from the oven and leave the brownies to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired, then cut into squares.
